"I own this camera, and it's the best in its class"

by on June 8, 2008

Pros: Excellent performance, superior picture quality

Cons: To get true 16:9, an anamorphic lens adapter is required

Summary: This camera is fabulous. It is easily the best in its class,

easily outperforming the Canon XL1s and XL2. CNET's "bad" remark

about it not having 24p has got to be a joke.

Perhaps the guys at the lab there think everyone that shoots video plans to move it to film (the ONLY truly useful purpose for 24p in video) The fact of the matter is that televisions are NOT 24p devices. They are 30fps interlaced (termed 30i or 60i depending on manufacturer) Even the highest Hi Definition standard is interlaced.

Don't get me wrong, progressive is useful, but interlaced is the SAME RESOLUTION (contrary to popular belief) and looks just as good for video. They both offer minor downsides (Progressive is choppier, Interlaced gives slight flickering of perfectly horizontal lines... but that is only introduced during post production with cg add-ons like boxes and text, and is easily counterable) Bottom line, 24p is only for people that want to THINK that the so-called "movie-look" enhances their shooting.

The fact of the matter is that it can actually harm it. (You can convert a 30i source to 30p, or even 24p with the right tools, and you can go the other way too... but you will never get the perfect smoothness that 30i offers from a 24p source, even after conversion.)

"Best in its class!"

by abarabas on June 26, 2008

Pros: Excellent video quality, easy to use.

Cons: Lack of true manual iris control

Summary: CNET's review of this camera is amateur in itself -- how is not having 24p or HD a drawback? This camera was not designed for that in the first place...

it's meant to fit the nitch of a prosumer/entry-level pro camera that's awesome for SD documentaries and SD broadcast... you don't need 24p or HD for that...

nor would you want to spend extra money for those features if you aren't going to be using them. Comparing apples to apples, this camera by far has the best picture in its class.

Although the camera lacks total manual control, the automated features work very well and can reduce your workload if you set your shots up correctly.

Pros: The camera is definitely great for low-light use. The quality of the picture is unbelievable. Combined with color correction on editing programs, your picture almost looks HD. IT is very easy to use, you don't even have to manually set anything to get a going.

Cons: For high- light use it is okay and the available filters make it amazing There are no XLR ports so you must use an adapter for professional audio, which aren't expensive and provide better quality than most built in XLR ports.
